Ceiling Water Damage: Signs, Causes and Repair

Stains, bubbling paint and sagging drywall are signs of ceiling water damage. After the leak is fixed and the area is dry, small areas can be patched, while sagging or crumbling sections should be replaced.

Signs to look for

Watch for these warning signs.

  • Yellow or brown rings
  • Bubbling or peeling paint
  • Sagging drywall
  • Musty smell
  • Dripping at light fixtures

Common causes

Upstairs bathrooms are the most common source: failed toilet seals, shower valves, tub overflows and grout failure. Roof leaks after storms and ice dams are next.

Patch or replace?

A dry, firm stain can often be sealed and repainted. Soft, sagging or crumbling drywall should be cut out and replaced, then textured and painted to match.

Fix the source first

Repairing a ceiling before the leak is fixed and the area is dry only hides the problem. Always confirm the source has been repaired.

Common Questions About This Topic

Is a water stained ceiling dangerous?

A stain alone is not usually dangerous, but sagging drywall can collapse and lingering moisture can cause mold. Have it checked.

Can I just paint over a ceiling water stain?

Only if the drywall is dry and firm and the leak is fixed. Use a stain blocking primer before painting.

How long does ceiling repair take?

A small patch can be done in a day or two including drying time for mud and paint. A full section replacement takes a few days.
